A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
