A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Vessels Declared Lost subsequent to Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale rescue and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine crew members, per a navy statement.
The boats had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures widespread power outages across the country.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.
Larger Political Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different officials emphasizing the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to previous comments, a senior Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to discover the vessels and ensure the security of the sailors.
At this time, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
