Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.
This Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd has died 89 years old.
This actor, whose filmography featured Chinatown, passed away at home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was announced in a statement by her child, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.
Laura Dern, who starred with her mom in several movies like Wild at Heart, called her “my amazing hero as well as my precious gift as a mother”, writing that she was present when she passed.
“She was an exceptional mother, daughter, grandmother, actress, artist along with caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she expressed. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
Ladd’s early career included supporting roles in TV shows like Perry Mason and the 1970s had her appearing next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
1980s and Beyond
During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow as well as humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.
During the next ten years, she was given another supporting actress nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The following year she was awarded another nomination for her acting in the film Rambling Rose that also featured Dern.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited Laura and I to England for a premiere and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, and crying, seeing us act.”
That decade featured performances in humorous films The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother another time. Those years also saw her score nominations for Emmy Awards for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She continued to star with her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, a movie, David Lynch’s Inland Empire and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She additionally starred with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her later TV roles included Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.
Writing and Directing
She also authored and directed the comedy film Mrs Munck, a film that included her and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Actually, I’m the only woman ever who directed her former husband. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”
Family Ties
She happened to be a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact on my life”.
In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and advised she only had half a year left but made a full recovery once her daughter shifted her to a new hospital.
“Should you harness your suffering and not let it back up like a sore or something, rather utilize it to discover, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are succeeding,” Ladd said.
