The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:
