NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm this decision right away after his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
