Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience endured in jail.

The revelation was made less than two weeks following the ex-leader left prison as he contests his conviction related to criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire presidential race money linked to the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in a preview, implying the account is more about his thoughts during seclusion as opposed to a broader observation regarding the strained and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he states. “The din is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, Sarkozy had appeared remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He had told the court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where an innocent man is sentenced to jail then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He remained secluded for his own security in a space roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison located in the capital. Guards stayed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he had eaten solely dairy snacks in prison worried that any food may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, who saw him regularly each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better outside jail than inside. “He has faced threats against his life, heard shouts at night and emergency responses next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October when a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for next spring.
