PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
