The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism emerged several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to care for a young patient who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
