The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
