The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Haze After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city showed an air quality index above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic particles in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst levels ever documented in Beijing, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Factors

The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
