The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
