The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war management of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages come back no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's home in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area said additional dead people had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medics stated.
