The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
