The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
