That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

The evident and straightforward truth that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
